Simplified illustration in today’s dollars: the payout from savings uses your real return (nominal return minus inflation) spread evenly from retirement to life expectancy.

CPP and OAS are added in today’s dollars as a rough estimate — actual benefits depend on your contribution history, when you start them, and future indexing.

This does not model taxes in detail, the OAS clawback, or GIS. Market volatility is not in the projection above — see the Market Uncertainty tab.

Market Uncertainty

The readiness check assumes a smooth return every year. Real markets are bumpier. This runs 2,000 simulated lifetimes through your plan and shows the range of outcomes — from lucky to unlucky.

Fan chart: projected balance in today’s dollars. The light band holds the middle 80% of the 2,000 outcomes, the dark band the middle 50%, and the line is the median path.

How to read this: each simulated lifetime draws one year of market history at a time (with replacement) from 1980–2025 Canadian stock and bond total returns, blended to your investor profile, then replays your savings and spending plan through it.

Limitations: bootstrapping assumes the future resembles the past — it ignores fat tails, mean reversion, fees, and taxes, and pairs historical nominal returns with your inflation assumption. Past performance does not predict future results. This is a hypothetical illustration, not a prediction or a guarantee.

Historical data: Canadian equities = S&P/TSX Composite total return; Canadian bonds = FTSE Canada Universe Bond Index total return.
