Every January 1st, every Canadian 18 and older gets a fresh gift from the CRA: another $7,000 of TFSA contribution room. If you’ve never contributed and were 18 or older since 2009, that’s now $102,000 of total lifetime room waiting for you.

The TFSA remains the most flexible account in the Canadian system. Contributions aren’t deductible, but everything inside — interest, dividends, capital gains — grows tax-free, and withdrawals are tax-free too. Unlike an RRSP, taking money out doesn’t cost you the room permanently: whatever you withdraw becomes new contribution room on January 1st of the following year.

That flexibility makes the TFSA the right home for several jobs at once: an emergency fund earning real interest instead of sitting in chequing, medium-term savings for a car or renovation, and long-term retirement investing. One account, many jobs — just keep track of your contributions so you never over-contribute (the penalty is 1% per month on the excess).

A January habit worth building: set up an automatic monthly contribution on payday. $7,000 a year is about $583 a month — and automatic money gets saved while debated money gets spent.

If you’re not sure how much TFSA room you personally have, check CRA My Account — it shows your available room based on contributions reported to date.
